Martin Montoya

An Austin native, Martin Montoya currently resides in Lake Jackson, TX where he teaches in Brazosport ISD. Martin spent 13 years as a band director at Brazoswood High School, a 6A school boasting 4 concert bands, 2 jazz bands, 2 winter guards, and the 250-member Buccaneer Marching Band. Under his direction, the Brazoswood Marching Band made consecutive appearances at the UIL State Championships, as well as multiple appearances as a finalist in Bands of America Regional Championships. In 2017, the John Philip Sousa Foundation awarded the Brazoswood Band the Sudler Flag of Honor, an international award recognizing achievement in concert band performance.  With his assistance, the Brazoswood Symphonic Band was selected as the 2013 Texas Music Educators Association Honor Band, and performed at the TMEA Clinic and Convention in San Antonio. In 2020, the Brazoswood PM Jazz Band was selected as the TMEA Invited Jazz Band for the 2021 Virtual Conference.

Prior to joining the Brazoswood faculty, Martin taught in Michigan at the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park, from 2005-2009, where he served in various capacities, including Interim Director of Bands for the 2008-2009 school year. Under his direction, the Plymouth-Canton Marching Band made its 20th appearance as a Top 12 Finalist at the Bands of America Grand National Championships. While in Michigan, Montoya also served on the music faculty of Spring Arbor University.

Outside of his daily band director duties, Martin maintains an active schedule as a designer and clinician for marching ensembles throughout the country.  He has designed for marching bands, winterguards, indoor drumlines, and drum and bugle corps. Martin has held instructional and design positions at the Madison Scouts, Carolina Crown, Guardians, Genesis, and Revolution.  

An active clinician and adjudicator, Martin has judged at the Region and Area level in Texas’ UIL Marching circuit, and served as a clinician for TMEA and ATSSB All-Region concert and jazz bands around the state. 

Martin received the Bachelor of Music Degree in Education from Texas State University, and a Master of Music Degree in Trombone Performance from Michigan State University. In the summers of 2001 and 2002, he had the honor of performing with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps winning the DCI Championship both years.
